The Working Of N95 Respirators

By Ina Hunt

It is very important for a person to protect him/herself whenever he/she come into contact with harmful particles. N95 respirators are rated among the seven best filters. They are said to provide up to 95% protection against harmful particles. Very few particles are, therefore, capable of passing through the respirator to reach the user. This filter does not, however, block oil particles from reaching the wearer.

Contaminated air is usually passed through the filters and unwanted molecules are retained while particles that are not harmful reach the respiratory system. In the manufacture of these respirators, cotton, glass, plastic and some other materials are the commonest materials used. They are the best when it comes to retaining unwanted particles. They are mostly preferred since they can be easily disposed, and they are not as costly as other types of filters.

There are various ways techniques involved in preventing particles that are not required. Firstly, the flow of air is restricted to one radius. This way, only small particles will penetrate the filter. Larger particles are not capable of following a curving contour. A movement similar Brownian motion also helps in preventing of harmful particles from passing through the respirator. There are also some special waxes, resins and plastics used for the purpose of coating the respirator. These create an electrostatic force that retains the unwanted particles.

Manufacturers of this product also made it in a way such that, the velocity of air entering it is low. This is possible due to the manipulated slope and shape of this product. The manipulation is always done with the view of increasing the surface area. This means particles moving at a low velocity can be easily blocked as compared to fast moving ones.

Share a n95 respirator is not advisable. This is normally given as a warning to avoid movement of harmful substances from a person others due to the contamination of the filter. Each one should, therefore, have his/her own equipment for safety. This way, the probability of meeting harmful substances is very much minimized.

For efficiency, the respirator must be very fitting on the face of the wearer. Proper fitting prevents possibilities of leakages. To confirm whether the filter is fitting, the wearer should adjust the strings and ensure tightness and comfort on the face. Mirrors can as well be used by the wearer to ensure that it is properly worn.

The name n95 alludes to the fact that the device provides 95% prevention of harmful molecules from reaching the wearer. This fact should, however, not confuse the user to think that it provides absolute protection. It is possible for some molecules of unwanted substances to find their way into the respiratory system of the user. Individuals who have had histories of chronic respiratory defects should visit their doctors before using this equipment.

There is no n95 equipment for children and people who have hair in their faces. This is the case because it is not possible to attain tightness with these people. When these people use them, they may not be very effective.
