What To Do With Pecans For Sale

Nuts are known for their valuable nutrients. Pecans for sale are packed with plant sterols, omega-6 fatty acids and age-busting antioxidants. Eating just a small handful each day has the same cholesterol-reducing power as commercial pharmaceutical cholesterol drugs. What better excuse could a person want for eating pecan pie topped with butter pecan ice cream.

Botanically, the pecan tree is deciduous; the pecan itself is not a nut, but what is called a drupe. A drupe is a kind of fruit with a skin and a mesocarp, or flesh, surrounding a hardened endocarp which contains a seed. This seed is what we eat and what we call a nut, or a pecan. Other, more familiar, drupes include apricots, cherries, plums, nectarines, damsons and peaches.

The seeds from the drupe, which are sweet and have a buttery flavor, are edible either fresh or incorporated into recipes, mostly desserts. The wood from the pecan tree is used for making furniture and wooden flooring. It is also burned and used as a fuel for smoking meats. In addition to the southern states, the pecan tree is native to Mexico. The word, "pecan, " means a nut that needs a stone to crack it.

Georgia is one of the American states that we have to thank for our pecan delicacies. They are grown mainly in the southwest part of the state in Albany. Other products of the Peach State are, well, peaches, as well as pine timber, tobacco, cotton, peanuts, rye, poultry and hogs. Georgia is famous for the Dukes of Hazzard, Gone With the Wind and former President Jimmy Carter.

The heart of Dixie, Alabama, is also known as the yellowhammer state and also the cotton state. It is also a good source of pecans. Other gifts from Alabama are soybeans, peaches, peanuts and sorghum. Around 20 million people visit Alabama every year; of these, 100,000 come from around the world, mainly, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom and Japan. Workers from Alabama were responsible for building the rocket ship that first carried astronauts to the moon.

Iowa is probably the northernmost of the pecan-producing states. This is America's heartland. The largest producer of corn and ethanol, Iowa's other main products include hogs, soybeans, oats and cattle. Other healthy economic sectors are finance and insurance. Iowa is the only state bordered on two sides by rivers.

Another American state where you will find pecan trees is Louisiana. This intriguing gulf state also brought us the New Orleans Saints, Mardis Gras, the Superdome and lots of interesting geological history. With a rich French heritage, Louisiana carries on the French system of electoral practices. Here, you will also find the praline, another luscious delicacy featuring the pecan.

The Louisiana Pecan Festival Beauty and Beau Pageant is an annual event held every October. The aim is to crown a king and queen to reign over the Pecan Festival itself, which runs over the first full weekend in November of each year. The event attracts between 60,000 and 70,000 visitors a year. The amount of tourist dollars the festival brings to the state sure isn't peanuts!
