Oven Toaster As Tabletop Reflow Oven

By Tanisha Berg

The world has been running in electronics nowadays. Computers are constant sights everywhere, at factories, in offices and most commonly at homes. Today, they have been very important in doing communication and transactions which are done on a daily basis by humans.

The heart of the field of electronics is reflow soldering. It is the process of joining metals together with the ultimate goal of creating an electrical circuit where electricity is able to pass to power up devices. This process takes place in monstrous ovens. Although that would be very ideal, others just cannot afford an oven that expensive. As a solution, a tabletop reflow oven can be made out of an oven toaster.

The basics is creating a mechanical bond between metals through a solder. It is similar to the solder used in jewelry making and used by plumbers doing their work. What it does is it simply joins metal parts together. The solder should have a lower melting point than the pieces it joins because it will have the danger of burning if otherwise. In addition to that, it will cool and settle down faster.

After joining, the entire set is subjected under a heating process that melts the solder, thus, joining the parts together permanently. Here, enters the reflow ovens which are used in joining surface mount components to circuit boards primarily. Other options to do soldering are also available such as using infrared lamps and hot air pencils to join parts individually.

Infrared and convection and vapor phase are the two types of reflow ovens. The first one contains many heating zones followed by cooling zones and moves through each chamber through conveyor belts in a preset time. This is make to sure that the process will be safe and will have high quality.

The second type uses a heat transfer liquid that undergoes transition to emit thermal energy used to do the soldering work. The boiling point of the liquid should match that of the solder to achieve the best results. Remember that the solder should not burn because it would definitely ruin the work.

Since the convection type uses nitrogen all the time to maintain a no oxygen atmosphere inside the chamber which increases the costs of the work, the vapor phase type is more advantageous. It is already an oxygen free process and totally nitrogen free, too making it more cost effective. Also, overheating cannot happen because the maximum temperature the set can reach will depend on the boiling point of the liquid. You just have to be extra careful in choosing the medium for the process.

One good alternative is using secondhand or brand new oven toasters. This is for people who are tight on their budget or maybe those whoa re just beginning to find their career on electronics. You just have to do some adjustments in its electrical wiring and functions in order for it to be fit for soldering works. It is very advantageous and handy when you only have a tabletop to work on.

With a little help from experienced electronics experts, you can now convert your oven toaster and do some soldering jobs. You do not need to worry for the space because all you need is just a tabletop. Just do not try to do things your way without prior knowledge and experience because you are risking your life that way. Electronics is a very complicated field dealing with electricity and such that you can never know what will happen with just one wrong move.
