Search Engine Optimization: Take Your Site To The Top

By Kalyn Vigoren

Search engine optimization is an art, a science, a mystery and, to the inexperienced, a great big pain. But it need not be so! A little learning goes a long way towards demystifying the whole process. The ideas that follow will show how small changes to a website can have big impacts on the way search engines treat it.

Set up your website for maximum search engine ranking by using relevant keywords in the URL. Search engines place a fair amount of weight on the terms used in the URL, as long as those keywords also appear elsewhere on your page. Even if you cannot control the domain name used for your site, the names of your pages should be up to you.

Do not let search engine optimization take over your online business! True, SEO is an important part of building your website. SEO should never be as important as satisfying your customers, though. If you spend so much time on search engine optimization that you find yourself neglecting your customers, you should reevaluate your priorities.

While trying to optimize search engine results do not use frames. Frames can ruin a website's encounter with search engines. Search engines do not recognize frames as websites. If your website applies and uses frames, search engines will only index the home page and there is no guarantee the search engine will even do that!

Make a number of mini-sites that lead back to your main site. This way, each site can focus on one or two keywords and have a fully functional site that you can optimize and get traffic for, but serves a dual purposes since it will link back to your main website. The more mini-sites you have, the more point to your original site, and that will cause it to rise in the search engine page rankings.

Keep your content updated. If a reader logs onto your site and reads about offers that are expired or information that is outdated, they will likely back right out of your site. Take the time to update your content quite often to keep it as fresh and up to date as possible to keep readers engaged. If you include some audio or video content for your site's visitors, you will need to have transcripts included as well. When you offer these transcripts, search engines can then categorize your content and position it properly in its listings.

When you initially launch your new site, send out a press release to local media who may be interested in covering the story. Even if you already have an established site, do a "remodel" and send out a press release for the new and improved unveiling. You might be surprised by how many publications have space reserved for just these types of stories.

One interesting way to implement a 301 redirect is to use a link shortening site such as Bit.ly. The benefit of using a site such as Bit.ly is that it shortens the link, and your site is provided with the click credit for the link, rather than Bit.ly receiving the credit itself.

Earning prime placement on those search engine pages is what being involved in web business is all about. If you can follow these SEO tips and implement them correctly on your website, you should have no trouble climbing the ranks and earning a higher ranking every few days. Just keep plugging away until it happens.
