Towards A Greater Appreciation Of Kitchen Dish Towels

By Jamie Muck

One of the central rooms in household lifestyle and layout is the kitchen. This is where people eat and socialize. Yet it is also where they spend a substantial amount of time doing housework. The usual humorous remarks or arguments about doing the dishes are commonplace, as is sharp rebuke the day after about no-one doing them. Kitchen dish towels form part of this tradition.

Washing up regularly is not just a matter of a preference for tidiness. Unwashed dishes are a hazard to the inhabitants' health. Leftover food on crockery and utensils is soon colonized by germs. Knives used to cut raw food, meat in particular, are especially dangerous. Proper hygiene necessitates keeping the cooking area and its implements clean.

Choosing the right dish towel is part of this priority. The towel should be able to absorb the water on the entire load, and should also not leave any moisture on the dishes, drying them comfortably without too much exertion by the person doing the drying. It should also have a tolerable or even beautiful appearance.

Cotton makes the best towels, in terms of their material. A dense, soft towel made of pure cotton is very absorbent and goes through lots of dishes. Artificial material like polyester or polycotton is not as suitable because it absorbs far less water and leaves a film of moisture behind. Thinner cloths such as those that have been in use for too long become saturated before the load is done.

The design is also important. It forms part of interior decor so it must be appropriate to the household in general. Souvenir towels are one option, as are attractive embroidery and color combinations. Size is also a factor and should be adequate.

Dish towels are a mandatory part of kitchen equipment, whether they are just there to serve their purpose or to entertain and and decorate. As one of the cheaper culinary items, they are an affordable method of making this important room more functional and inviting.
