Why Mobile Crane Inspections Are Essential

By Marlene Blevins

When you hire a mobile crane for your construction, you are left with the responsibility of planning, supervising, and lifting operations plans. You and other people who hire cranes may not necessarily have the skills and details of how to use the machines and supervise work. Most people opt to hire contractors for this type of work. Hiring the right skilled people including mobile crane inspections technicians is essential to ensure safety, which comes first before all other things.

Daily inspections performed by technicians on site include checking for maladjustments that may interfere with the proper operation of the machines. All the functional mechanisms are looked at every day before such machines are used to ensure everything is working properly. All limit switches are checked for operation with no load on hooks. The pumps, lines, tanks, and other parts of hydraulic and air systems are examined for leakage and deterioration.

Load hooks may be examined for things like cracks and deformations. Although cranes are carefully designed and manufactured to ensure safety, if they are not constantly monitored, they can develop defects that could lead to problems. Due to constantly use, the parts of these machines may develop weaknesses. If they are not checked, they can cause very serious accidents.

Employees are happy when they work under safe environments. If your company has been recording increasing number of accidents related to cranes, you are mostly likely to lose your employees. It is a requirement by OSHA that these lifting machines should be inspected regularly or periodically.

While it will spend your money, it is something you cannot do without because you might know the state of machine you are buying. It is better to spend some few hundred dollars to have that machine inspected than forego the inspection only to realize that it is the worst mistake you made. Hiring the inspectors can save you money by ensuring you purchase a good machine.

Records about inspections should be kept to help monitor the progress of the machine. If you have major defects being reported in a particular crane, it may indicate possible serious threat to continued use of that equipment. Accidents associated with cranes are very devastating. They can leave your company in heavy financial burden through costly lawsuits and compensations for the injured people.

The inspectors you get should be certified with the Crane Certification Association of America. With a detailed inspection, it assists you in making a valid decision and allows you consider the option of replacing a new one or opting for the old machine. A qualified inspector can assist you in coming up with a benchmark on the options you have. At times, you might even find that it is better to seek for a new machine than the old ones.

The people around also need to be aware of the restrictions that are imposed by the operators of cranes. This is for the benefit of the workers and other people who work around. For the inspectors to ensure all these aspects are followed, they should have such knowledge and ensure the inspection work pinpoints all shortcomings witnessed in site examination.
