The Effects Of Sexism In Sports

By Etta Bowen

Throughout the years, women have been discriminated in different number of ways. When it comes to casting of votes, they have been discriminated. When it comes to having equal rights as men, they are also not given this special chance. There is yet another sector in which these women are being looked down upon although not much attention has been paid so far. This is sexism in sports industry.

To start with, unfair treatment has been observed in a way that women and men are covered by the sports media. Male sport representative get more airplay compared to sportswomen. Men get more attention and make more headlines each and every time making them appear to be more prominent players.

The kind of attires women sport participants are made to wear has become a major source of concern in the world of today. In some specific games, they are made to wear very tiny clothes which at most times make them feel uneasy. On the other hand, male athletes usually wear what they are comfortable in and this is an issue which should be highly looked into.

In addition to that, complaints have been made on a regular basis concerning how females in sports are prone to verbal and physicals sexual harassment. This is done by their male colleagues and also their coaches. This is a very bad habit that highly discourages ladies to take part in this endeavor. Changes should be made with immediate effect.

In some instances, women are judged according to their looks. There are some games in which only the good-looking females qualify and this is highly discriminative as no much emphasis is put on their skill at times. This is not the same for the male counterparts as looks are never put as a consideration which has brought a huge drift between the male and the females.

During the years, games such as football have been deemed to be a mans only area. The introduction of female football has not been well received in the society as they are seen incapable of handling this kind of game. Posts such as coaches, trainers and referees are not given to females because it is feared that they may not perform as well as the men do and this is a form of judging the ladies.

In the golf arena, sexism is highly pronounced. This is seen as a mans territory. It has gone to the extent in which some clubs are created to be strictly for men. Women are not allowed to subscribe to these clubs. Many of the competing golfers were questioned concerning these issue and they seemed reluctant to speak about the matter.

In conclusion, just as there is a strong fight being put up on a daily basis to create equality in both sexes in many aspects of the society, similar effort should be seen in the sports area. This is for the main purpose of achieving the main goal of the day which is to create healthy development in the sports sector. Equality should be highly advocated.
