Wealth 101- How To Own Your Own Business

By Johnathon Black

After driving to work in the morning and spending about nine hours in the office, one might think starting a home business would be a good idea. After all, working on your own time schedule and without the expense of traveling to and from the office sounds like something we'd all like to do.

Get receipts from lunches with colleagues and prospects, because you can deduct expenses such as these at tax time. Such meetings would be considered legitimate business expenses. However, make sure that these meetings are with potential or paying clients. If not, they aren't tax-deductible.

Make sure that your email address is accessible on every page of your website. It should be super easy to get in touch with you. Customers that can't easily figure out how to contact you will become frustrated, and start looking elsewhere to make a purchase. Don't lose out on that sale because of a missing link.

To keep better track of your business' finances open a separate checking account that is just for your business. Ensure that all of your business' income and expenses go through this account. Practice good bookkeeping and keep track of every penny spent and earned. You may also want to get a small business credit card for expenditures.

If you have a business, then you need a budget. How can you run a cost efficient business without a budget? It is impossible, and therefore imperative that you incorporate a well devised budget into the planning process. This budget should include what your expenses are of course and it should itemize them. Make sure you are thorough and include everything so that you are not misleading yourself.

Make sure to set daily goals and do your best to stick with them. The most important part of that is prioritizing things so that they get done efficiently. Do not waste too much time on small tasks when there are much more important things that need to be done.

There is only one problem with this idea - it usually doesn't work out the way we planned. Small businesses have hidden problems and expenses, and unless you really know what you're doing and have a pretty good cash stash besides, chances are your business will fail. It does work for some people though, so plan carefully and give it a try.
