Learning How To Profit Today In Healthcare

By Ingo Weltson

If you work in the healthcare industry, you have seen many shifts happening already. There is a shift in medical insurance where every person has to have medical insurance. They are also seeing a battle between medical billers and insurance companies. Insurance companies want tougher regulations and medical doctors want more profits for their treatment of patients. The world of healthcare is becoming extremely complex. Most companies today are seeing their profits dwindling down. A lot of doctors feel that their money is not good anymore.

In reality, it takes time to come up with a good business plan. Many physicians are finding it easier to allow their patients to pay for their treatment in cash. This is becoming more popular today because of the high costs associated with healthcare. It is important to have money set aside for medical expenses. Today profiting in healthcare has a lot to do with your utilization management. It is becoming a full time job to do medical billing in a small office. Years ago, the medical biller would often do reception work or answering phone calls from patients. Today, medical billers have to be doing one task at a time. When someone does medical billing and coding, they actually improve the overall revenue.

Today, doctors feel like they are being bossed around by the insurance companies. Even though they have a PhD and went through 8 + years of school and residency, it doesn't matter. They are often being told that if they give treatment that is not medically necessary, they will not get paid on the service. This can be devastating for doctors that want to have their own practice. Many doctors don't want to feel like they are in a losing battle. Many want to believe that their training was meant to help patients.

A lot of medical billers say that the problem is not with the insurance companies. The problem is with incorrect billing and coding. I find it interesting that most medical billing companies are seeing 20% to 35% more revenues for their clients than doctors who choose to use in house billers. Don't you find it interesting that these medical billers are getting more money when they send their claims in? This means that the problem is not with the insurance companies. The problem is with the billers doing your coding.

Doctors that cannot get a good handle on their medical billing are find it difficult to collect on their claims. Claims that go unpaid are often thousands of dollars in lost profits each year. If your practice had revenues of 2 million dollar last year and you lost 30% of your revenues, you basically took a hit of around $230,000. That is a big chunk of your money going out the window. Instead of worrying about bankruptcy and loss of profits, try to figure out ways in which you can see increased revenues. Most outsourced billing companies give you monthly reports so that you can see an increase in your revenues.
