What happened was he used a pocketknife in giving amputation to his right arm just to escape the boulder that blocked him from getting out in the Blue John Canyon in five days. As painful as that sounds, he managed to survive.
When the occurrence did not happen yet, this man has been noted for being a good motivational speaker, outdoorsman, or even an engineer. He spends a lot of his free time in climbing many mountains like the ones in Colorado of about fourteen thousand feet or canyoneering. While freeing the arm desperately, he survived having only burritos to eat and a very little amount of water to drink for five days and almost gave up. On day four, it crossed in his mind to finally do an amputation deep within his bones and he disregarded the fact that he had the worst tools for use. He also forced his self in saving the urine he excretes only to drink it later especially on day five when there was already nothing to eat and drink. He brought a videotape so he used that for bidding goodbyes to the whole family and also managed to carve on walls that indicated his name, date of birth, or assumed date of death.
In performing the amputation, he used his multi tool in which the knife of about two inches was included. The worst part was that it was very dull especially when he used it for carving. However, he managed to do that successfully.
He still managed to hike with only one hand left with the really warm sun challenging him to survive. In the end, there was a family on vacation there. They alerted the people in charge for rescue plus they gave him a bit of water or food in a short time.
He thought he would bleed to death already since he lost about forty pounds. However, there were rescuers already when he had gone missing and flew using a helicopter. In fact, he was only rescued after six hours that the arm was cut.
He said that he might be dead if he only wanted to be rescued. In returning to the site, fact was that thirteen men have to push a boulder. He also scattered ashes of his cremated arm in the area.
